June Newsletter
June is my birthday month! I didn’t plan anything special this year. When I turned forty, my friend Joanne helped me throw a party. She made amazing June-themed decorations. You can see the strawberry garland in the photo. It was a super hot day and I spent a lot of time running in and out of the house, making pizzas, and spent way too little time talking with everyone. I ordered a beautiful cake from West Meadow Farm Bakery in Essex and was upset when I picked up the cake because they had gotten the colors wrong for the flowers and I made them redo it! And then when I posted a photo of the cake on social media, someone commented that it was the “most beautiful cake they had ever seen!” That made me feel incredibly guilty for my judgement of the cake and how I had behaved. The cake was delicious and I loved giving away big slices to all my guests to bring home because everyone was too full and hot to eat cake at the end of the party. It made me happy to think of everyone getting the cake out of their fridges later in the day.

This year, I did order myself a cake again. This time it was from Healthy Living in Williston, and I’m so glad I did! It was the perfect size and the decorations were pretty. And because I wasn’t sure what my birthday plans would be and was trying to coordinate plans with my mom’s schedule and my friends’ schedules, I ordered the cake way too late, and it wouldn’t be ready until Sunday, a full THREE DAYS after my birthday. I drove over to Healthy Living after teaching on Sunday and while I was waiting in line in the bakery section, a woman came up behind me and recognized me. She said, “You’re Amy!” I asked if she had come to one of my classes, and she said she had come to Yin a few times and loved it, having had no idea what Yin was before she attended. I thanked her for saying something and she said, “Thank you for being you.” And that was probably the best birthday present.
Although this year was a quieter celebration than other years, it had its glimmers. I taught my Fat Yoga class at Otter Creek Yoga on my birthday and everyone broke out singing “Happy Birthday” after coming out of savasana. My friend Taylor surprised me by showing up at that class with a dozen eggs from her chickens (including eggs from the chicken who had just been killed by a bobcat!) and we went out to the frozen yogurt place after class. The week also included other dinners with friends, sweet cards, gifts, and notes. I splurged on flowers from the Co-op. And I ate some of my cake every day for a week and enjoyed every bite.
